Choose Foods That are Healthy for Your Teeth

 

Hello, dear reader, and welcome back to our blog! Here at Select Dental Care in Coral Springs, we are all about spreading information relating to oral hygiene. For us, oral hygiene is not just something that we dabble in every once in awhile; oral hygiene is our bread and butter and, more importantly, we are passionate about making sure that people have as much information as possible when it comes to keeping their teeth and gums happy and healthy.  In our previous blog post, we went over some of the best foods for people’s teeth and, in today’s post we are going to list out a final few foods that we feel every person should incorporate into their diet in order to make sure that they are helping their teeth as much as possible. Help Your Teeth Thrive

 

We feel that it is safe to assume that everyone wants healthy, strong teeth. After all, teeth are a pretty essential part of the human body and, without them, life can become a little tricky. For this reason, making sure that you’re taking care of your teeth and providing them with the vitamins and nutrients that they need to stay healthy while simultaneously reducing the amount of bacteria that is present in the mouth. While nothing can take the place of proper brushing and flossing, the foods we have listed below can go a long way in making sure that your teeth stay strong.

 

 

  • Leafy Greens: This should come as no surprise but leafy greens are excellent for your teeth. Greens such as kale or spinach are full of vitamins and minerals that your teeth need and, even better, they are high in calcium which helps to strengthen your teeth’s enamel.On top of all this, leafy greens are chock full of folic acid, a type of B vitamin that has multiple health benefits such as treating gum disease in pregnant women. If you aren’t big on leafy greens such as kale or spinach, try mixing them in with other greens in a salad or, for those people who need a little sweetness to make the greens go down, throw them in a smoothie. When added with other ingredients most people cannot even taste the leafy greens.
  • Carrots: Although the claims that carrots help to improve eyesight were mostly played up by the British, one benefit that cannot be denied is the fact that carrots are excellent for people’s teeth. Like apples, carrots are full of fiber and crunchy. Eating raw carrots at the end of a meal helps to “scrub” the teeth and works to produce more saliva in the mouth, reducing the risk of cavities and gum disease. High in vitamin A and fiber, carrots are one of the healthiest snacks you can choose.
  • Almonds: Although we tend to tell people to avoid hard, crunchy foods such as nuts, almonds are an exception. Almonds are an excellent source of calcium and protein while simultaneously being low in sugar content. Almonds can be eaten throughout a meal or, if you so desire, can be consumed as a dessert at the end of the meal.
  • Celery: Okay, so while a lot of people tend to avoid celery because of its bland flavor, it is actually a great food for your teeth. Celery is full of water and fiber and, like apples and carrots, acts like a toothbrush and helps to remove food particles and bacteria from the teeth. Additionally, celery is a great source of vitamin A and C, two vitamins that are essential for healthy gums. So, the next time you think about throwing away those celery sticks that came with your meal, think again.

Hello, and welcome back to the Select Dental Care blog! If you have been keeping up with our blogs posts then you are well aware of the fact that we like to make lists of things. When it comes to information, especially information relating to your oral health, lists make things easier to digest and, in many cases, people are able to more easily absorb information in this format. Some Foods are Good for You

 

When it comes to your teeth, not all foods are particularly healthy for you. Foods that are high in added sugars, highly acidic, or sticky can do a lot of damage to your teeth and, for the most part, should be avoided as much as possible. However, some foods out there are actually good for your teeth! Below, we have listed a few of these foods and why they are good for your teeth.

 

 

  • Yogurt: Before we begin detailing why yogurt is good for your teeth, it is important to note the type of yogurt we are talking about. If you are downing a Chobani flavored yogurt every day with an added cup of honey, you are not really doing yourself any favors when it comes to the health of your teeth. The added sugars in this type of yogurt work to coat the teeth and provide the bacteria in your mouth with plenty of sugar to feast off of. Plain yogurt, on the other hand, is an excellent source of calcium, is high in protein, and contains no added sugars. Additionally, the probiotics found in most plain yogurts is excellent for your gums because they tend to crowd out the “bad” bacteria in your mouth, reducing the chance of gum disease and tooth decay.
  • Cheese: As if cheese wasn’t amazing enough, it turns out that it is actually pretty good for your teeth. Like yogurt, cheese is high in calcium and protein and, according to a study published in General Dentistry, eating cheese helped to raise the pH in people’s mouths and lowered the risk of tooth decay. By raising the pH in the mouth, harmful bacteria are unable to thrive in the mouth and, as we all know, bacteria are the cause of the majority of issues in a person’s mouth. In addition to the high amount of calcium and protein found in cheese, it is thought that the chewing required to eat cheese increases saliva in the mouth, further reducing the amount of harmful bacteria.
  • Apples: We’ve all heard the saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” but did you know that an apple a day can also keep the dentist away? While the majority of dentists warn their patients to stay away from particularly sweet fruits, apples have been shown to improve the health of people’s teeth. Apples contain large amounts of fiber and water and the action of eating an apple produces quite a bit of saliva in the mouth which helps to wash away bacteria. Additionally, the fibrous texture of apples helps to stimulate the gums when eating.

What’s the Deal With Flossing?

 

When it comes to flossing, how diligent are you? Do you floss every single day or do you let a few days lapse in between your flossing sessions? Do you even floss at all? While it might seem like we are interrogating you about your flossing habits, we promise we have a point. For millions of Americans, flossing is not a daily habit. While they might floss if they see a pack of dental floss right in front of them, for the most part people either neglect this oral hygiene step entirely or are so lackadaisical about it that it doesn’t really make that much of a difference. In our previous post, we went over some of the most common myths associated with flossing and, in today’s post, we are going to finish debunking a few more of these myths. We hope by the end of this post you understand that flossing is not really an option and should be something that you do each and every day.

 

Myth 4: Flossing is too timeconsuming

 

This is one of the many reasons that people tend to use when trying to explain why they do not floss. They claim that flossing is just too time consuming and that trying to incorporate it into their morning routine is just asking too much. First of all, flossing does not have to be done in the morning. In fact, if you are only going to floss once a day, it is better to floss at night because you will be removing the bacteria that has built up throughout the day. Second, flossing, when done correctly, takes no more than two to three minutes at most. If you cannot incorporate an extra two or three minutes into your daily routine, we suggest that you take a moment to reevaluate your time management skills.

 

Myth 5: I can use a Waterpik or mouthwash instead of flossing

 

This is one of those myths that is sort of true but, when you further analyze it, fails to actually hold up to scrutiny. Mouthwash or a Waterpik are great ways to clean in between your teeth; however, they are not as effective as flossing. Because mouthwash and a Waterpik only utilize liquid, they are unable to physically scrape against the teeth in the same way that floss does. In reality, both of these methods should be used as a precursor to flossing because each is excellent at loosening plaque and bacteria between the teeth and under the gum. Remember, anytime you think that something can fully take the place of flossing, it can’t.

 

Myth 6: I don’t need to floss if I don’t have food in my teeth

 

Too many people believe that the main benefit of flossing is extracting pieces of food from in between the teeth. While this is certainly an auxiliary benefit and goes a long way in making sure that you do not suffer from tooth decay, the real reason you should floss regularly is to remove the bacteria that forms below the gum line and in between the teeth. In addition to the removal of bacteria, flossing helps to scrape away any plaque that has developed along the gumline and, in many cases, can prevent the formation of tartar. Remember, even if you don’t feel like you have food stuck in your tooth, it is a good idea to floss in order to make sure that your mouth is as healthy as possible.

Do You Know Your Flossing Facts?

 

Few things in the world of oral hygiene are more hotly contested than flossing. While everyone is aware that flossing is a good thing and dentists recommend that people floss every single day, few people actually seem to take this advice. While we here at Select Dental Care cannot definitively say why people ignore their dentist and don’t floss, we can make some educated guesses. Like most things in life, there are certain myths that flow around flossing. These myths have cropped up over the years and have been passed down as facts when, in reality, they are nothing more than speculation and misunderstanding. To help clear things up, we are going to use the next few posts to go over some of the most common myths associated with flossing and why, based on data from dentists, they should not be accepted as fact. Myth 1: Stop flossing if your gums bleed

 

Above all else, this myth is the one that keeps the most people from flossing. Anyone who has flossed knows that you can expect some light bleeding. While bleeding is something that you should avoid as much as possible, a small amount of bleeding resulting from flossing is not something that people should be concerned with. Too many people believe that if they bleed they are flossing wrong when, in fact, the opposite is true. When your gums bleed, they are doing so because the bacteria between your teeth have inflamed your gums, causing them to be much more sensitive. As you floss more regularly, you will eliminate a large amount of the bacteria that is stuck between your teeth and under your gums, meaning that, eventually, your gums will stop bleeding from flossing altogether.

 

Myth 2: Flossing will cause fillings to become loose

 

While the goal of proper oral hygiene is to completely avoid having to get a filling, as people age, that becomes increasingly difficult. As we age, our teeth require more care and attention and, for many people, the daily stresses of life can get in the way of proper oral hygiene and teeth can become compromised. While fillings do an excellent job repairing damaged teeth, some people seem to have become confused when it comes to fillings and flossing. A myth has been circulating for some time that flossing, for whatever reason, can work to loosen fillings in the teeth. Even a little bit of scrutiny is enough to completely debunk this myth. Flossing is a necessary component of any kind of dental work, including fillings. Once the filling is placed by your dentist they will floss around the area to make sure that no bacteria is lurking under the surface of your gums. If a dentist can floss your teeth directly after placing a filling does it make sense that you can’t floss at home for fear of making the filling loose? We didn’t think so.

 

Myth 3: My teeth are too close together to floss

 

This is one of the most common reasons that people tell us they are unable to floss. They feel like if they have to force the dental floss through the spaces in their teeth, they are much more likely to slice into their gum. However, here at Select Dental Care, we can confidently say that we have never dealt with a patient whose teeth were too close together to properly floss. Dental floss is extremely thin and is designed to fit into the tight spaces between the teeth. If you feel like your teeth are still too close together, special floss has been developed that is thinner than normal floss. Be warned though, this floss breaks much, much, easier.

Don’t Let These Mouthwash Myths Fool You

 

For millions of Americans, mouthwash is a part of their daily routine. More convenient than flossing, many people feel that mouthwash does an adequate job of getting rid of the food that is stuck in between their teeth while simultaneously reducing the noticeability of bad breath. Here at Select Dental Care, we feel that mouthwash certainly has a place in your medicine cabinet, however, we also want to make sure that all of our readers are aware of what exactly mouthwash can and can’t do. Disinformation is the enemy of public knowledge and it is our mission to make sure that all of our patients, current and potential, are on the same page. In our previous post, we went over some of the most common myths associated with mouthwash and its usage and, in today’s post, we are going to continue in this same vein. Myth 4:  A small amount of mouthwash will do the trick

 

This myth is somewhat of a self-fulfilling prophecy. It’s no secret that most mouthwashes burn. Because of this, people tend to use as little mouthwash as possible as quickly as possible. While you will still get that mouthwash burn with this technique, you are not actually doing your mouth any favors by using a small amount of mouthwash and only moving it around your mouth for a few seconds. The vast majority of mouthwashes are most effective when in contact with the tissues in your mouth for longer than 30 seconds. This can be difficult for many people to accomplish because the burn can become quite intense. However, it is imperative that you try and hold out for as long as possible. The burn fades quicker than most people realize and, if you’re going to put up with any amount of pain, it is in your best interest to at least achieve some results at the same time.

 

Myth 5: You can replace brushing with mouthwash

 

This is one of the most detrimental myths that we hear. Somewhere along the line, people get the idea in their heads that you could substitute mouthwash for regular brushing. We are here to tell you, however, that this is completely untrue. While it is true that mouthwash can help reduce the amount of bacteria in the mouth, it does not do so well at removing plaque and other debris from the mouth. To achieve this, people still need to brush their teeth regularly and floss. Mouthwash should be thought of as an add-in to your oral hygiene routine, not as a quick, one-step solution to your oral hygiene needs. Only in certain situations, such as after a major oral surgery or tooth extraction, will a dentist suggest that a person utilize mouthwash instead of brushing.

 

Myth 6: Mouthwash is only for the mouth

 

This last myth isn’t bad in the scheme of things but we thought we would cover it anyway. Most people believe, and understandably so, that mouthwash can only be used in one’s mouth. After all, the product is called mouthwash. However, mouthwash is much more versatile than people might first assume and can be used for a wide range of applications. Some people swear that alcohol-based mouthwash is excellent for treating dandruff, is a suitable toilet bowl disinfectant, can be used as an underarm deodorizer, and can be used for wound care in an emergency. It is important to note that these uses are not listed on the label as approved so, please, be careful when trying out these alternative applications.

How Much do You Know About Your Mouthwash?

 

Hello, and welcome back to our blog! When it comes to mouthwash, our patients here at Select Dental Care have quite a few questions. Is mouthwash good? Bad? Insignificant? With so many patients curious about this oral hygiene tool, we felt that we should use the next few blog posts to go over some of the most common myths we hear surrounding mouthwash and why they are not true. We feel that it is important to lay to rest any doubts people may have about mouthwash from these false “facts” and we hope that by the end of this blog series you feel more confident when it comes to choosing and using a mouthwash as part of your daily oral hygiene routine. Myth 1: All mouthwashes are made the same

 

This first myth makes sense if you don’t think too much about it. For most people, mouthwash, no matter the type or brand, pretty much feels the same when they use it. This has lead many people to think that all mouthwashes are the same, however, this is simply not true. Mouthwashes can typically be broken down into two categories, cosmetic or therapeutic. Cosmetic mouthwashes most typically loosen bits of food from in between the teeth and temporarily reduce bad breath, leaving people’s mouths feeling fresh. On the other hand, therapeutic mouthwashes contain other active ingredients such as, chlorhexidine, fluoride, essential oils, or cetylpyridinium. These ingredients have been shown to reduce plaque and help fight the development of cavities. Which mouthwash you choose depends entirely on your situation, so be sure to do some research before deciding to go with a product.

 

Myth 2: Mouthwash has no bad side effects

 

Another common mouthwash myth is the idea that mouthwash is harmless. People assume that just because it is a dental product, there is no way that it can have any negative effect on their mouths. However, this claim is simply not true. A vast majority of mouthwashes contain alcohol which is intended to kill bacteria and fight bad breath. Interestingly enough, this alcohol can cause people to experience dry mouth which, as many people already know, is one of the top causes of bad breath. While alcohol-free mouthwashes are available, other ingredients contained in these types of mouthwashes can have potential side effects as well, such as burning or the staining of teeth. Additionally, essential oils can have an uncomfortable, sharp tastes, and chlorhexidine, another common ingredient in alcohol-free mouthwashes, can temporarily alter people’s sense of taste. To combat these side effects, we recommend that you only use the mouthwash as directed and try not to overexpose your teeth.

 

Myth 3: Mouthwash will cure your bad breath

 

One of the most common reasons that people use mouthwash is to eliminate bad breath. This makes sense considering pretty much every advertisement containing mouthwash mentions the fact that it helps to fight bad breath, however, these claims can be somewhat misleading. While it is true that most mouthwashes will temporarily fix bad breath, mouthwash is not a long-term solution to this issue. In fact, mouthwashes that contain alcohol can actually make bad breath worse by causing dry mouth, reducing the amount of saliva in your mouth that naturally gets rid of bacteria. Additionally, while some causes of bad breath are caused by substances in the mouth, many instances of bad breath, such as garlic, are actually caused by the air escaping our lungs when you exhale. If you want a permanent solution to your bad breath, we recommend that you brush twice a day in order to ensure that no plaque or tartar builds up along your gumline. This is the best way to ensure that your breath is as fresh as possible.

Don’t Let an Abscess Get Out of Control

 

When it comes to oral health issues, an abscess can be one of the most painful and dangerous conditions that a patient experiences. In the world of dentistry, the term abscess is used to describe two distinctly different conditions, referring to either periapical abscess in the tooth or periodontal along the gumline. What are the Differences Between the two Abscess Types?

 

Before we begin with the rest of this post, we must make one point very clear. If you are suffering from an abscess, whether it is of the tooth or of the gum, it is important that you visit a dentist, such as Select Dental Care, as soon as possible. Abscesses can cause some serious problems and it is in your best interest to deal with it as soon as possible. Now that we’ve gotten our PSA out of the way, let’s talk about the different abscess types.

 

 

  • Periapical Abscess: Also known as a tooth abscess, this condition occurs when the nerve of the tooth is dead or dying. The abscess tends to develop at the tip of the effects tooth’s root and then spreads to the surrounding bone. Patients suffering this type of abscess will notice quite a bit of pain associated with the tooth, however, it is impossible to diagnose a periapical abscess without the help of a dentist.
  • Periodontal Abscess: This type of abscess develops along the gum and is most typically caused by an infection in the space between and individual’s gum and tooth. Periodontal abscesses can form due to many factors, such as food stuck between the tooth and gum or, in extreme case of periodontal disease, a buildup of bacteria in the mouth can develop under the gum and seep into the bone. With this form of abscess, patients commonly notice a pimple-like growth on the gumline.

 

 

An Infection of the Gum Should Concern You

 

While periapical abscesses are nothing to scoff at, the true danger lies in periodontal abscesses. As a result of our modern society, most people have come to believe that infections aren’t that serious of an issue. Although most people don’t like to think about it, our teeth are not indestructible. For many, the thought of damaging a tooth elicits feelings of intense pain, discomfort, and general revulsion but, while it is not fun to think about, everyone needs to have some general knowledge when it comes to dealing with a damaged tooth. In today’s post, we here at Select Dental Care wanted to go over the steps you need to take if you or someone you care for chips or cracks a tooth.

 

Damaged Teeth are Not Fun

 

If you or a loved one crack or chip a tooth, your first instinct might be to panic. While we understand that this is a stressful situation, we implore you to stay calm. Taking a moment to assess the situation and come up with a game plan can go a long way in ensuring that your tooth is not damaged further or, in a worst-case scenario, damaged to the point where it must be extracted. Analyze the Pain

 

Although it might seem counterintuitive, when a person chips or cracks their tooth they are likely to experience very little pain or discomfort. In fact, many of our patients express how normal their tooth actually feels and that they rarely notice the crack or chip until they see it in a mirror or run over the damaged area with their tongue. However, if you are experiencing quite a bit of pain from your cracked or chipped tooth, you may want to consider visiting an emergency dentist. Be Careful Using the Tooth

What Constitutes a Dental Emergency?

 

When it comes to health issues, especially those relating to the mouth, it can be difficult to know when a situation constitutes an emergency response. While the obvious situations, such as when a tooth is knocked out or a major crack develops, are easy to categorize as an emergency, less obvious dental issues can be harder to quantify. If a patient can’t see a physical manifestation of a dental issue, they may feel that whatever pain or discomfort they are feeling does not require emergency care. While this is certainly the case sometimes, more often people will ignore an issue that should have been addressed sooner. Here at Select Dental Care, we offer emergency dentistry services to individuals who require them and, in today’s post, we wanted to go over one situation that many people may ignore for far too long: Root pain.

 

When Does Tooth Pain Become an Emergency Situation?

 

If you are anything like the average person, you have probably experienced tooth pain at some point in your life. Our teeth put up with quite a bit of abuse during the course of our lives and, occasionally, they experience damage from the stress they are placed under. While much of the tooth pain that people experience can be explained away by food or other substances getting stuck in the space between the gums and the teeth, sometimes the pain develops from a more sinister place. Below, we have listed a few of the issues that most commonly result in the need of emergency root canal therapy.

 

 

  • Accidental Damage: While most people are very protective of their teeth, occasionally accidents will happen. Chipping a tooth, breaking a tooth, or having a tooth completely knocked out is not only painful but can also be highly detrimental to the health of the root of your tooth. In some cases, a tooth can become so damaged that the root becomes exposed. This exposure makes it much easier for bacteria in the mouth to infect the root, causing extreme pain and discomfort for the person affected. Your root may have been exposed as a result of the damage and could require more intense treatment than damage that is more cosmetic.
  • Abscess: In a previous blog post we touched briefly on the risks that are associated with abscesses in the mouth, however, this subject is of such importance that we felt it was a good idea to go over it again. Unfortunately, if you have an abscessed tooth, you may not even be aware of it. While some abscesses form along the gum and are easily identifiable other abscesses, known as periapical abscesses occur within the tooth itself, making them much harder to identify. Most commonly, when a person is suffering from a periapical abscess they will notice a dull ache in their tooth that gradually intensifies. If you have noticed a severe amount of pain in one of your teeth, it may be the result of an abscess and should be looked at by a dentist as soon as possible.

 

 

How Does Root Canal Therapy Factor Into This?

In most cases, root canal therapy is performed as a scheduled procedure because most people have recognized the problem and taken the appropriate steps to fix the situation. However, in some cases, a root canal must be performed as an emergency dental procedure. This happens most commonly in situations where a person has tried to ignore a toothache in the hopes that it would go away, only to find that the pain has reached levels that they can no longer tolerate. Is Alcohol Hurting Your Mouth?

 

Alcohol is, for better or worse, deeply ingrained in society. The earliest evidence ever found in relation to alcohol production was discovered in Northern China when archaeologists confirmed traces of a fermented drink made from grapes, honey, hawthorn berries, and rice in jars dating back to 7000 BC. Based on this evidence alone, it’s pretty easy to see that alcohol has been a part of human culture for literally thousands of years and, in our opinion, is probably not going to go anywhere anytime soon. While many of the negative effects associated with alcohol are well known by the general population, we here at Select Dental Care have found that fewer people realize the effects that alcohol can have on a person’s oral health. To help spread some knowledge, we are going to use today’s post to go over some of the effects that alcohol has on oral health and what you can do to help reduce these negative effects. Your Teeth Could be in More Danger Than You Realize

 

When you ask most people about the effects of sugar on the teeth, they will quickly tell you that consuming a lot of sugar is a sure fire way to promote tooth decay. Decades of work have gone into instilling this knowledge in the public consciousness and, luckily, it seems that almost everyone is aware that sugar and teeth are not the best of friends. What many people fail to realize, however, is that alcohol can be just as bad, of not worse, for your teeth. Wine is one of the most popular alcoholic beverages the world over and, unfortunately, it also has some of the highest sugar content of any alcoholic beverage. Wine is fermented from grapes which, as everyone knows, contain quite a bit of natural sugars. The sugar contained in wine is like a buffet for the bacteria living in your mouth and can lead to excess bacterial build up, resulting in an increased risk for periodontal disease. Anyone who has had a little too much to drink can attest to the fact that alcohol can lead to some major dehydration. Although a liquid, alcohol does very little in the way of hydration and, quite literally, sucks moisture from your body. While hangovers are the most common side effect in relation to the dehydrating effects of alcohol, saliva production in the mouth is also affected. While you may not think that a little less spit in your mouth is that big of an issue, you may want to think again. Less saliva in the mouth results in an increase in bacterial growth which, if ignored for too long, can lead to a wide range of oral health issues including tooth decay and infection. Again, this effect can best be mitigated by alternating consumption of alcoholic drinks and water to not only wash away bacteria in the mouth but to keep your body hydrated. A hydrated body is a happy body and will go a long way in ensuring that your saliva production stays healthy.

 

Nobody Wants Stained Teeth

Every year, Americans spend over a billion dollars on teeth whitening products. Entire articles have been dedicated to the effects that coffee, soda, and other substances have on the color of teeth and many people have adapted their lifestyle to completely eliminate these products.
